Signs of an Emergency

The following list offers situations that should absolutely be treated as an emergency; however, this list is not comprehensive. Trust your instincts. If you are concerned, it is best to have your pet seen by a veterinarian.

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Acute abdominal swelling
  • Electric shock
  • Excessive vomiting or diarrhea
  • Bleeding
  • Exhibits symptoms of heat stroke
  • Seizures
  • Sudden onset of weakness
  • High or low temperature (more than 104 or less than 100 degrees)
  • Unable to urinate or defecate

If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, please come to Animal Emergency Center of North Fulton immediately. We are a walk-in veterinary clinic. No appointments or referrals are required, but if you have time to call in advance, it will give us the opportunity to prepare for your pet's specific needs. Every patient is evaluated upon arrival and vital signs are taken. Patients are seen based on the severity of their illness or injury.

Should your pet require medical or veterinary surgical care, the hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging technology, in-house medical testing capabilities, a modern surgical suite and a wide range of veterinary specialty resources.

History of the Hospital

Dr. Byron Hawkins and Dr. Gerald FitzGerald purchased the practice in March 2002. Both doctors strive to provide patients of the Animal Emergency Center of North Fulton with advanced urgent and critical care.

When you bring your pet in for veterinary emergency services, you can trust that they are cared for by the most experienced emergency veterinarians in the Metro Atlanta area. All of the veterinarians at Animal Emergency Center of North Fulton are members of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society.

Veterinary Referrals

We commonly refer to a veterinary specialist surgeon when emergency back surgery is required overnight. In some cases, the referring veterinarian requests a referral to an internal medicine specialist, cardiologist or neurologist.

After business hours, you will transfer your pet to your primary care veterinarian for further care. We will fax all information to your primary care veterinarian and our veterinarian will personally call your veterinarian to answer any questions they may have.

Payment Information

If your pet needs to be hospitalized, we will provide you with an estimate for our services. The full amount of the estimate is due upon the patient's admission. We accept cash, personal checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and CareCredit.
